Newhouse announces run for U.S. Congress

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Sunnyside farmer and former Republican state legislator is eyeing Doc Hastings' seat in Congress. Dan Newhouse officially announced his candidacy Thursday at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Newhouse is the former director of the state's Agriculture Department. He said he wants to bring issues to D.C. that would help the region - things like continuing water projects in Central Washington and making improvements to Obamacare.

"This is an important race and that's our system," said Newhouse. "We have to work to gain people's trust."

Hastings announced last week that he won't seek reelection in November. Four other Republicans are already in the race.
