25 years for woman who killed husband with hammer

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - A Vancouver, Wash., woman who admitted fatally beating her husband of 33 years with a hammer has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Authorities say Donna Rae Williams kept Mark Williams' body more than two weeks before reporting the death.

She pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death last May 14. She was sentenced Thursday in Clark County Superior Court.

The Columbian reports the 52-year-old woman apologized in court to her husband's family, describing him as "my life ... my best friend."

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Camara Banfield said Mark Williams' memory was tarnished by Donna Williams' original defense that she was the battered wife of a violent man addicted to cocaine.

Toxicology tests showed Mark Williams had no cocaine in his system. Banfield also said there was no evidence that Donna Williams had battered woman syndrome.
