A new fleet for Kennewick Police

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- A fleet of new patrol cars could help Kennewick Police respond to your emergency faster.

KPD recently began overhauling its entire fleet with new state-of-the-art cars.

The hope is to keep officers safer in extreme emergencies.

Each car had a barrier that can take a 70 mile-per-hour impact.

Modern brakes allow police to switch course at a moment's notice.

"Car accidents are the number one killer of police officers," says Sgt. Ken Lattin, Kennewick Police. "This is the safest possibility."

22 new cars will by introduced in the next year, costing more than a million dollars.

They're paid for with the general fund.

Each has a five-year warranty as well.
