Action News honored with 7 journalism awards

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Action News team was honored with seven awards by the Society of Professional Jourmalists Northwest in the 2013 Excellence in Journalism contest.

The KIMA-TV team swept the Investigative Reporting category, earning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place honors. The wins included, "Was Your Home a Meth Lab?" reported by Sarah Navoy, "Federal Puppy Mill Investigation" reported by Matt Finn, and "Gophers at the Airport" reported by Samina Engel.

KEPR-TV Reporter Gina Lazara earned a first place win in the General News Reporting category with her story, "Horse Dumped Along Highway." KEPR-TV's Abigail Acone earned a third place win in the same category for "Race Organizer Strings Along Charities."

Acone also earned a second place in in the Live Breaking News category for her coverage of "Amber Alert for Teen."

Navoy also received a second award in the Feature News Reporting category. She received a third place award for her story, "Disability Doesn't Define Him."

The awards were announced Saturday during a ceremony in downtown Seattle.
