Benton County air rated 'unhealthy'
BENTON COUNTY, Wash. - The National Weather Service out of Pendleton said numerous cities in eastern Washington are under an air quality alert through noon Sept. 8.
The cities of Kennewick, Richland, Benton City, Prosser, West Richland, Hanford, Dayton, Starbuck, Pasco, Connell, Goldendale, White Salmon, Trout Lake, Bickleton, Roosevelt, College Place, Walla Walla, Burbank, Waitsburg and Prescott are experiencing unhealthy air.
The Washington State Department of Ecology (DoE) reported air was rated unhealthy for sensitive groups in the Kennewick area, Monday and was rated Tuesday at unhealthy/very unhealthy throughout the area.
The department and the Benton-Franklin Health District says those most likely to be affected by smoke are children, older adults, pregnant women and those with breathing conditions such as asthma. They recommend that everyone limits their time spent outdoors.
The Benton Clean Air Agency issued an air quality alert, making all outdoor burning illegal.
The news release said most of the smoke is coming from fires from the west and south in Washington, Oregon and California.
