Benton County deputy resigns over misconduct allegations

BENTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE -- On February 12, 2014 Benton County Sheriff's Office received a citizen's complaint against Deputy Shane Benningfield. The complainant, who has previously been involved in a dating relationship with Deputy Benningfield, reported three separate allegations. The first two allegations involved possible domestic violence and inappropriate conduct while on duty. The third allegation was the use of illegal anabolic steroids, which is a controlled substance.

An investigation by the Benton County Sheriff's Office Detectives Division revealed probable cause, indicating the illegal possession and use of anabolic steroids by Deputy Benningfield. Several search warrants were obtained that revealed possible overseas purchases of illegal anabolic steroids and medical supplies. Several substances, believed to be anabolic steroids, were located in Deputy Benningfield's residence, as well as medical supplies used to assist in the injection of the substances. Blood and Urine samples from Deputy Benningfield were obtained and sent to the Washington State Crime Lab for analysis. This case has been referred to the Benton County Prosecutor's Office for review. On May 5, 2014 Deputy Benningfield resigned from employment with the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
