Chiawana HS mourns the loss of a champion Riverhawk
PASCO, Wash. -- This week, the Chiawana High School community mourns the loss of a student, an athlete and a friend.
Riverhawks 9th grader Reyfford Aranda passed away on Friday. As a member of the Chiawana Wrestling team this past season, the 16-year-old was the 4A District champion and finished 6th at State finals.
Pasco Police determined Aranda took his own life.
Family and friends have expressed their love for him on social media, saying he was an important part of the Riverhawks family. We spoke with friends who said "Rey" would forever be remembered as a champion.
School leaders say grief counselors will be at the high school for a couple of days to help students and staff through this difficult time. Pasco School District regularly holds suicide prevention workshops, it's most recent back in September.
Tomorrow evening there will be a Rosary for Rey at 7:30 at St Patrick's Parish in Pasco, with the funeral following on Wednesday.
If you'd like to help the family, there is a go-fund-me account set up to cover funeral costs - click here to donate. Community members have already raised over $11,000.
