Community tips help stop Franklin County thieves

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Across the river from Kennewick, the lure of increasing metal prices is causing more people to break the law. The Franklin County Sheriff Department tells us they've recently seen a spike of people stealing scrap metal.

Fence wiring and metal-hose heads are often the first things targeted.

Thieves then sell those items to salvage companies. We're told citizen reporting is helping crack down on metal theft. One corporal says community tips go a long way at helping solve crimes.

"The citizens should be vigilant about what vehicles are going into their neighborhood or around their farms out in the county rural area. We've had good success with arrests and convictions," said Franklin County Sheriff Corporal Gordon Thomasson.

In the aftermath of the increase, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office is now partnering with salvage yards to track any suspicious items.
