Dedication ceremony of Colonel Franklin T. Matthias

RICHLAND - Preserving the memory of the man served our country. The community dedicated a statue of Colonel Franklin T. Matthias today.

Now, this bronze monument honors him at the Richland Public Library. The work is sponsored by the Historic Street Project and by AMVETS.

Col. Matthias commanded the Hanford Engineer Works during World War Two. He led construction of the first Hanford reactor. We talked to the nephew of Col. Matthias who says his impact is unforgettable.

"Remembering somebody that did a real important job. When they dropped the bomb, they had it in the paper. He called my dad up and said 'we made a big boom'" said Col. Matthias' nephew Norman Matthias.

Col. Matthias also helped built Richland High School, as well other housing, community centers and more.
