Fender-bender accidents up at the Richland Wye

RICHLAND - Our viewers love to complain about roundabouts as much as our cities love to build them. A lot of concerns came in when a traffic circle was added to the Richland Wye.

In the six years it's been there, KEPR learned the number of accidents remains high for that roundabout. WSDOT reports over 200 accidents at Steptoe and Columbia Park Trail since 2007.

The good news is, most of those are fender-benders. The old intersection had fewer accidents.

But traditional intersections tend to have more serious collisions. The state says the roundabout at the Richland Wye stops other backups from spilling over.

"The traffic was backing up all the way into the highway on 240, very dangerous. That's a lot of traffic. But again, the roundabout is serving its purpose, it is moving traffic," said WSDOT Project Engineer Moe Davari.

Upwards of 25,000 drivers use that roundabout every day.
