Got a Honda? Make sure to lock up!

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The KEPR Crime Tracker spotted an outbreak of break-ins and thefts involving older Hondas.

If you own a Honda, consider yourself on notice. Crooks constantly have your ride in their crosshairs and they'll stop at nothing to get what they want.

"There's some organizations that are taking them, chopping them up and selling the parts," says Sgt. Ken Lattin, Kennewick Police.

Thieves have targeted eight Hondas in the last week alone. Three cars were stolen. Five were stripped of their parts.
Police think the same criminals are to blame. KEPR mapped the locations of where it's happened and learned the thefts happened all over Kennewick. From the mall... to Metaline Avenue in central part of town to downtown Kennewick.

All of this is deja vu for Emily Anderson. A year ago, the Kennewick native had her truck broken into. Now with a Honda, she's not taking any chances, not even at the neighborhood gas station.

"I try not to leave anything at all. It definitely is in the back of my mind all the time," Anderson says.

Authorities tell KEPR they believe the same people are involved in each case. Police say Hondas are often targeted because of their value in illegal street racing.

"When it comes to modifying their cars, Hondas are the most desirable car to do that," says Sgt. Lattin.

Police still don't have any leads in any of the cases. They say extra vigilance is key, because if a crook is brazen enough to steal a car in Kennewick, they're likely to head across the river to a neighborhood near you.
