Heat strikes blueberry crops

ELTOPIA, TRI-CITIES - As you might imagine, this week's triple-digit heat did a number on our local crops.

The blueberry harvest bore the brunt of the damage. In fact, one grower tells us the heat damaged 10% of his supply.

The heat delayed the remainder of the blueberry harvest, and could eventually push up prices at the grocery store.

"The triple-digit heat is really an issue on highly perishable crops. We irrigate extensively to be prepared for that excessive amount of heat," said local farmer Gary Middleton.

We also learned last week's hail storm caused damage with the local apple supply. Even then, experts say they're confident there will still be enough apples to go around. The harvest still expected to come in mid-August.
