Kennewick home heavily damaged by fire

KENNEWICK FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE -- Kennewick firefighters extinguished a heavily involved single-family residential structure fire on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at 2401 N. Rhode Island Court at 8:56 P.M. The first reporting 9-1-1 call was from a passerby who saw the smoke and flames.

The fire originated on an exterior deck area and quickly spread throughout the combustible deck and extended into the home's interior and attic areas. At the time of the fire, the residence was occupied by the two adult homeowners who were notified by passerbys. Attempts by the homeowners and others to extinguish the fire with garden hoses before fire department arrival were unsuccessful due to the heavy fire involvement. There were no injuries to citizens or firefighters.

To bring the fire under control and perform extinguishment twenty-one firefighters responded. Kennewick firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the Richland Fire Department and a support crew from Benton County Fire District #1. The fire suppression operations took approximately one hour to complete.

Investigation of the fire's origin and cause is being performed by fire investigators, and is centered on the exterior deck area. Investigators will examine the deck for any potential sources of ignition. The fire is not considered suspicious in nature.

Preliminary fire damage estimates are $100,000 for the structure and its contents.
