Mid-Columbia Ballet hosting sensory-friendly matinee of The Nutcracker
RICHLAND, Wash. — The Mid-Columbia Ballet is performing The Nutcracker Suite for Tri-Cities audiences for the 42nd year in a row.
This year the Richland dance company is opening the holiday favorite to larger audiences by offering a sensory-friendly performance for children with special needs and their families.
Unique features of the Sunday show include a condensed version of the story with music performed a little softer, theater seating a little brighter, and with jarring special effects like cannons completely removed.
Mid-Columbia Ballet Programs and Outreach Director Renée Adams said the dance company noticed Tri-Cities families with special needs missing out on artistic and dance experiences, so they decided to put together a program accessible to all families,
"We want to bring everybody into the ballet, so that all people no matter their abilities, physically or mentally, get to enjoy this amazing art form."
