National Train A Teacher Day: Firearm instructors to host free gun safety course

Firearm instructor Stacy Alexander is participating in National Train A Teacher Day, offing a free course to educate teachers, administrators and staff about how to handle a gun.

MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. – In response to the mass shooting in Florida, weapons trainers all over the United States have come together to offer a free firearms training service to teachers, administrators and school staff.

They are calling it, National Train A Teacher Day and local firearms instructors in Milton-Freewater are hosting a free workshop inviting teachers in our community to learn about gun safety.

"I’m a mom, I'm a grandma, it's important to me that the kids are safe in school," said Stacy Alexander, firearms instructor. "But as a mom my job is to protect my kids and my family, so I'd like to see those teachers who are comfortable to be able to do the same thing with their students."

The tragedy in Florida pushed her to take action for more school security.

"We shouldn't have to worry about sending our kids off to school," Alexander said.

Alexander is a certified firearms instructor in Milton-Freewater, participating in National Train A Teacher Day, offering a free course of firearms safety training to all educators.

"The object is not to train an armed teacher program it is more able abolishing a gun free zone," she said.

Alexander specializes in training women, who have never seen or touched a gun before, and also teaches women who want to go on to compete.

"I find that with women they are more comfortable learning with other women," she said. "I find that it empowers women and it carries over into other aspects of their lives.”

However, Alexander admits, concealed carry is not for everyone.

"It's a very personal decision, but I would encourage everyone to come out and get the training that they need," she said.

Alexander said she wants teachers to have the ability to act, instead of react, so they can save lives.
