New plans for the Uptown need local support

RICHLAND, Wash. -- Richland has big plans for the Uptown Shopping Center, but it needs more business owners to sign on.

The city already got the grant money to add eight different murals with a futuristic look. The project is years in the making and not without roadblocks. The latest is getting business owners to put up a couple thousand dollars to prep the walls for the paint.

"Somebody comes to look at the murals and decides to go shopping there as well or have something to eat at one of our local restaurants, great. But the first step is to get people to go there, and you have to have something to make them want to go there," said Pam Bykonen of the City of Richland.

Richland staff say they need at least three businesses to sign up by this summer in order to keep the grant.
