Officials call off recovery efforts for missing swimmer at Palouse Falls
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Wash. -- Officials said they still haven't found the swimmer who went missing at Palouse Falls Saturday night, and they've now suspended their search.
Franklin County Sheriff's deputies said they searched for hours Saturday and Sunday, but rescue divers could not enter the water because the current was too dangerous and swift.
Deputies said the recovery effort is suspended and they've closed down the park.
Law enforcement responded after receiving a call around 5:30 Saturday night.
Officials said the missing swimmer is a 23-year-old man from the Spokane area.
Deputies say witnesses saw two swimmers get sucked into deeper water, and only one was able to surface again.
Several agencies responded to the scene, including Columbia Basin Dive Rescue and the Pasco Fire Department.
They said the missing swimmer's family has been notified, and they are not releasing his identity at this time.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that swimming at Palouse Falls can be very dangerous.
