Outbreak of fires in Benton County

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- A rash of fires broke out Sunday in parts of Kennewick and Finley. It sent crews scrambling to get to the worst ones first.

A total of five fires ignited at practically the same time. Officials estimate it burned over 1,000 acres, but thankfully didn't threaten any residential homes. Many of you reported smelling smoke all the way in West Richland. Crews from as far away as Prosser came in to help local departments get a handle on situation.

"We're doing the best that we can. It's very dry out here right now and we've got a good south wind push, so it makes things a little difficult, but we're getting enough resources here to manage right now, so it's going well," said Benton County District 1 Fire Chief Lonnie Click.

At this point, officials don't know what started the fires. The cause is under investigation.
