Pipe bomb found at Columbia Park

KENNEWICK POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE -- On 3/10/2014 at approximately 0843 hours, dispatch was notified of a possible pipe bomb in a trash can approximately 100 yards west of the Kiwanis Building at Columbia Park; 6007 W. Columbia Park Trail Kennewick. Upon Police arrival, contact was made with a diligent city employee, who works for the Parks Department, who located the device while changing garbage liners in trash receptacles.

Investigating officers examined the suspicious device and determined that it was a possible threat. A safety parameter was established and the Richland Bomb Squad was notified and responded to the scene. The device was determined to be a pipe bomb and was disposed of by the Richland Police Department Bomb Squad.

As a secondary safety precaution, KPD requested assistance from Hanford Patrol to utilize their explosive detection K-9 team. Hanford Patrol responded and checked the area however no additional devices were located. We are asking anyone with information to contact the Kennewick Police Department.
