PASCO, Wash- In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, March 2, children throughout our community spent the afternoon celebrating "Read Across America Day."

Children at thousands of schools, including James McGee Elementary in Pasco, participated in the event in hopes to bring more awareness of the importance of reading.

The annual event was created by the National Education Association in 1997 as a way to encourage reading across America.

Association leaders said research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.

Children enjoyed special stories, skits and guest readers.
