Record hunting numbers in Umatilla

UMATILLA, Ore. - Duck hunters can be lucky to bag one bird in a day. But those visiting the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge are snagging four, on average.

The Umatilla Refuge has a record number of water fowl being caught. But those hunting in the McNary Refuge are not finding the same success. Water has frozen over, and birds have fled to other locations.

"This season has been pretty tough, but I just moved here from Idaho, so finding spots that aren't private or already leased out is pretty hard," said Tyrel Bean.

Typically, McNary gets 90 hunters in a day. This season, they may see as few as one.
