Remains found in search for missing Kittitas boy

KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. -- The Kittitas County Sheriffs office tells KIMA remains found near an Ellensburg canal are being investigated. It's stirring speculation that they could be those of Cody Haynes.

Haynes is the 11-year old boy who went missing nine years ago. A private investigator tells KIMA a team of cadaver dogs discovered a series of bones near 1500 Stevens Road around 4 p.m. Monday.

The investigator tells KIMA it's possible the bones could be the remains of a child. They have been turned over to forensics for testing.

Lisa Doney, Cody's mother, hired the private investigator from New Mexico after the police gave up the search when the trail went cold.

Cody was living with his dad in Kittitas when he went missing in September of 2004.

The Kittitas County Sheriff's Department tells Action News other remains have been found in the past that did not turn out to be Cody Hayes. They are using caution before linking the remains to Hayes.

Investigators are expected to return to the scene continue combing the area and Action News will stay on top of this story.
