Shop fire causes explosions

HERMISTON FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES -- On April 15th at approx. 6:25 pm Hermiston, Umatilla, and Stanfield Fire Departments responded to a shop fire at 29730 Stafford Hansel Road.

The shop was about 40 ft by 80 ft with numerous other building next to it. There was also many other items burning around the building, including pallets, plastic planters, tires, propane tanks, and farm equipment. Oxygen, propane, and acetylene tanks were inside the building causing multiple explosions. There was also multiple other chemicals inside the building.

An enormous smoke plume was pushed over I-84 by significant winds. OSP was called to monitor the conditions.

Water tenders were able to shuttle water from the nearby Umatilla Army Depot.

The buildings were once part of the town of Ordinance which was converted into agriculture after the Umatilla Army Depot was built.

Crews were on-scene throughout the night. The cause of the fire is unknown.
