Trail portion closed due to suspicious fire at Zintel Canyon
KENNEWICK, Wash. - A trail at Zintel Canyon has been closed after officials say a suspicious fire scorched the area, potentially creating safety risks.
A stretch of the Spirit of America trail closed Tuesday afternoon from the West 15th Avenue access point to the south-end of the trail at 24th Avenue, city officials have announced.
The trail will remain closed until cleanup operations are complete and authorities have made sure conditions are safe for visitors.
The fire at Zintel Canyon near the Kennewick Irrigation District burned roughly six acres of brush Tuesday. Firefighters informed Action News flames came within 50 feet of nearby homes, but no buildings were impacted.
Fire crews from the Kennewick and Pasco fire departments, Benton County Fire District 1 and Walla Walla Fire District 5 responded to this fire. The fire has since been contained and crews are working to clean up the area.
According to reports, the fire is suspicious and detectives are investigating to determine an exact cause.
Kennewick city leaders are stressing that people do not enter the canyon while this closure is in place.
