State lawmakers proposed 180-plus bills to raise fees, taxes

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - During the 2013 Legislature, lawmakers proposed raising taxes or fees more than 180 times.

The Columbian newspaper reports 188 bills to raise taxes or fees were proposed. Those bills would have raised more than $6 billion for the state if they had passed. Just 35 revenue bills did pass and the Office of Financial Management estimates they will raise at least $3 billion over the next decade.

Those numbers come from an analysis by the Washington Policy Center, a Seattle-based conservative think tank.

The group says that despite what lawmakers say about not being interested in raising taxes, about 7 percent of the nearly 2,500 measures introduced in 2013 would have raised taxes or fees. Those proposals came from Democrats and Republicans alike.
