Strip club prepares to open in Kennewick

The City of Kennewick received the business license application for City Star's Gentlemen's Club last week and city officials say they have 30 days to approve or deny it.

A new business is going up in Kennewick near the iconic cable bridge, but it's one that some consider to be a little racy .

The club recently posted a Craigslist ad online, saying they're hiring dancers and entertainers.

The City of Kennewick received the business license application for City Star's Gentlemen's Club last week and city officials say they have 30 days to approve or deny it.

The application requires approval from planning and building, the Kennewick Police Department and Kennewick Fire Department.

But according to public relations director Evelyn Lusignan, they've already received phone calls from residents who aren't keen the on strip club.

"I think the biggest question we'll usually get, especially if someone doesn't like a particular business, they may say, ‘Why are you allowing that in the city?’"

Lusignan says it's because they legally have to let this kind of business establish and operate in the city: "Cities can't prohibit adult businesses from being within their city. What they can do is regulate where they're located and how they operate."

There are several restrictions on possible locations for a business like City Star’s

According Kennewick’s municipal code, it can't be within 500 feet of any residential area and any public or private school. It also can’t be within 500 feet of any trade or vocational school that regularly has students under the age of 18.

It also can't be within 500 feet of a church or religious facility, as well any park, public facility or open space zone.

In addition, it can be within 1,500 feet of another adult business.

Lusignan says these buffer zones will likely prevent a strip club from starting up in downtown.

"Unless there was a location that met all that criteria, I don't think there's one that we have in downtown Kennewick necessarily."

As for how it operates, the city has 11 pages of regulations, outlining how adult businesses will operate, including requiring managers and entertainers to get licensed and go through a criminal background check with the police department.

“There's lots of restrictions to keep the business operating in a way that's not going to be impactful to the community."

City Star’s Gentlemen’s Club is located at 101 S. Gum St.
