Additional arrest warrants charging Rendering Criminal Assistance in the First Degree were obtained by WWSO detectives later the same day, 01/07/14, for Breanne Rutherford and Andres Torres-Rodriguez.
WWSO Detectives developed information which led them to believe that the three suspects were inside the Knights Inn Motel (formerly the Royal Scot Motel) at 20 W. Houston Ave. in Spokane. The assistance of the Spokane Office of the FBI and Spokane Police Department was requested at approximately 4:00 pm today. It was believed that the suspects could still be armed.
Spokane Police Patrol Officers, SWAT and Hostage Negotiators quickly developed a plan and responded to the location. Hostage Negotiators initiated contact with the subjects inside the motel. At approximately 8:00 pm two subjects (a male and a female) came out of the hotel and into police custody safely and peacefully.
Approximately 15 minutes later, the remaining two subjects (a male and a female) came out of the hotel and into police custody safely and peacefully.
Three of the four have been identified as Carlos Valdez, Breanne Rutherford, and Andres Torres-Rodriguez. The other female will be identified and interviewed regarding her knowledge and possible involvement in the crime.
The investigation began when the victim's body was discovered near the intersection of Mojonnier and Beet Roads on the morning of Friday, January 3, 2014 by a pedestrian who reported it to the Walla Walla Police Department. Due to the reported location, the WWSO was contacted. A Patrol Deputy responded to the area and confirmed the death.
An autopsy was conducted on Saturday, January 4, 2014. Walla Walla County Coroner Richard Greenwood classified the death as a homicide by gunshot wound.
Walla Walla County Sheriff John Turner commended Detective Sergeant Gary Bolster and Detective Mike Good for their quick and outstanding work on this case. Sheriff Turner also stated that he is grateful for the great partnerships and help from the other agencies involved.
The family of the victim has requested that the media not contact them out of respect for their loss.
