Tri-Cities students give a helping 'HAND'

TRI-CITIES, Wash. - Students here in the Tri-Cities are giving a helping "hand" with some of their latest work. High schoolers and middle schoolers each formed groups to make and enhance prosthetic arms.

Hundreds of students were invited from Yakima to the Tri-Cities. Each team got a kit of basic items to build a prosthetic arm. Arms were judged on how well they tossed a ball, moved objects, and on dexterity. Competitors say it is all about thinking outside the box.

"It's a wild idea, it's not something I ever thought I would be able to do in high school, so it's kind of fun to come out here and be able to," said Chiawana senior, Melanie Cantu.

Winners received a Kindle Fire. Bechtel also donated $15,000 toward math and science programs in our region.
