WA State Dept. of Health warns against drinking 'raw water'
PASCO, Wash. —
A new consumer trend has people drinking raw water, but it's leaving health experts concerned.
According to the Washington State Department of Health, raw water is untreated and untested water.
That means water drinkers don't know what's actually in the water, which could have harmful parasites, viruses and bacteria such E. coli.
The Department of Health reports health consequences can include nausea and vomiting. In some cases, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, hospitalization and death are also possible.
"Fact of the matter is, your tap water is safe to drink and it is checked continuously by your water system to make sure it is safe and remains safe,” says Department of Health public information officer Anthony James.
James says if you do have questions about your drinking water, call your water supplier to find out more.
