Walla Walla receives downtown revitalization award

SEATTLE -- Walla Walla is being recognized for the continuing revitalization of its historic downtown.

The city was honored with an Excellence on Main Award Wednesday at the RevitalizeWA conference in Wenatchee. The awards are organized by the Washington State Main Street Program.

Downtown Walla Walla's new residential guidelines received the Outstanding Special Project award. The Downtown Walla Walla Foundation created the guidelines to encourage the development of downtown buildings for residential use. Main Street Program representatives praised the program for finding an alternative to government regulations.

Eleven Excellence on Main Awards were handed out Wednesday. Ellensburg received the most, with three. Gig Harbor and Port Townsend each received two, while Camas, Langley and Wenatchee received one.

The Washington Main Street Program, managed by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation, encourages cities to strengthen their downtown areas through economic restructuring, design, organization and promotion.
