Whetstone Fire now at 50% containment

According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the fire started around 11:45 A.M. Saturday near Lower Whetstone Road and McKay Alto Road near Waitsburg, Wash.

Fire fighters are making progress on the Whetstone Fire burning in Columbia County. The latest estimate has the fire at 50% containment.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the fire started around 11:45 A.M. Saturday near Lower Whetstone Road and McKay Alto Road near Waitsburg.

Officials say a combine started the fire, which has burned an estimated 1,300 acres. It is burning in standing grain and CRP ground. Tall grass is providing the fuel for the flames.

Twenty-five structures are threatened, but none have been lost at this time.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says there are Level 2 and 3 evacuations.

Weller Canyon Road residents were also evacuated, but officials say they may return home after that order was reduced to level 1 at 4:30 P.M. Saturday.

Multiple agencies responded to the Whetstone Fire.
