WA State Patrol reminding drivers to move over in emergency, work zones

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Troopers in Washington will be on the lookout for drivers in emergency as well as work zones.

According to a news release, Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers will focus on these zones around the state for a "Slow Down, Move Over" emphasis this weekend, June 22 - 24.

Troopers are working to bring awareness to the "Move Over Law" (RCW 46.61.212), which requires drivers to approach emergency zones with due caution, slow down and switch lanes or move over if safe to do so.

This law has recently been updated to also include work zones.

Reports indicate 32 troopers have been injured and 86 patrol cars have been hit statewide in the last three years alone.

Troopers say the purpose of this emphasis is to help all people on the roads get home safely.

Those who do not follow these rules are subject to a $214 fine that cannot be waived or reduced.

A list of emergency and work zones included in this law can be found here.
