Alberta man sentenced to jail for stealing $13 worth of pepperoni

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - A southern Alberta man has been sent to jail for stealing (Canadian) $13 worth of pepperoni.

What might have been just a shoplifting charge turned into robbery after Clayton Russell assaulted a security officer who witnessed the theft at a Lethbridge grocery store.

The officer suffered bruises, as well as cuts to his elbow and nose.

Russell pleaded guilty Monday in provincial court.

He was sentenced to six months in jail, but was given credit for six weeks in pre-trial custody.

He must also submit a sample of his DNA for the National DNA Databank and is prohibited from possessing certain firearms and weapons for 10 years.
