1,000 pairs of shoes donated to UGM

PASCO, Wash. -- A local church took their shirts off their backs to help people in need. Well not exactly, but they did take their shoes off their feet.

The congregation at the Garden Christian Assembly in Kennewick went home in their bare feet Sunday. They left 1,000 pairs of shoes to be donated to the Union Gospel Mission.

This is the third time the church has done this! The last two year about 600 shoes were donated so the shelter is ecstatic about this year's numbers.

"It means I can walk around comfortably with a pair of shoes on my feet and not have to worry about stepping on anything or hurting my feet. It's awesome, it's great that they pulled together and donated for people like me who are in need of them," said one woman who appreciates the donations, Melonie Trotman.

Most of the shoes will be saved for a back-to-school giveaway in the fall.
