Donations pouring in for Pasco family who lost mom, wife after birth

TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- KEPR is continuing to follow the heartbreaking story of a Pasco mom who passed away right after giving birth.

Ana Gutierrez-Ramirez would have been 38 today. She left behind her husband and five children.

We were first alerted to this tragedy by a 17-year-old girl. She began raising money for the funeral.

"One person even donated $500 just by themselves," said Ashlyn Surgeon, who set up the donation site. "And I was just thinking, people are so generous, they don't even know the family and they are willing to take the money out of their bank to do this for someone, so I thought it was awesome."

Ashlyn has known the Ramirez family since she was a young girl. Her dad once employed Raul Ramirez. She hoped to raise $10,000 through an online fund.

Our story about Ana has been seen by millions since it aired Tuesday. Donations have topped $15,000.

"I can't wait for all the donations to come in and actually be able to hand Raul the money and say, you know, 'This is all yours,'" said Ashlyn.

It may be weeks before we find out exactly how Ana died.
