Police identify children found dead in west Kennewick

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Kennewick Police Department has released an updated release on the deaths of two children Monday. The original release is posted below the update.

The Benton County Coroner John Hansens has confirmed the identity of the victims. They are identified as 16 year of age Kaitlin Deborah Chavallo aka Austin. Her legal name is still Chavallo although she uses the last name of Austin. The second victim is identified as 12 year of age Ethan Andrew Austin.

The stepfather who discovered the crime and called police is identified as Andrew Austin. A point of clarification from the previous press release: Andrew Austin is the step-father to Kaitlin and
biological father to Ethan.

Here is what is happening today:

WSP Crime Scene Response Team will continue today with Kennewick Police Detectives to process the crime scene. The victims will be turned over to the Benton County Coroner later today. An autopsy on both victims is scheduled for tomorrow.

Investigators will again canvass the neighborhood looking for anyone who may have seen or heard something additional. Investigators will be reviewing social media websites for additional information along with any private surveillance in the neighborhood.

Thus far in the investigation we have confirmed that there were only four people living in the house; the two victims and the mom and dad. There is another 20 year of daughter who visits the residence periodically.

We have reviewed comments made by the public on our local news media websites and it appears that many have jumped to the conclusion that this is a murder/suicide. It is too early to make that definitive conclusion. This is still being handled as a death investigation.

The Benton County Coroner John Hansens and Sgt Ken Lattin will be coordinating all future release of information.

On June 9, 2014 at approximately 5:00 pm, Kennewick Police responded to 8609 W 3rd to a death investigation. According to the reporting party, he had arrived home to find his 16 year of age step-daughter and 12 year of age step-son in the house, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators did locate a handgun near the crime scene.

There are no known suspects at this time and there does not appear to be any signs of forced entry into the residence.

We are withholding the names of the victims at this time pending notification of family members.

We have canvased the neighborhood to see if anyone saw or heard anything unusual today. In addition, we are interviewing family members at Kennewick Police headquarters to try to piece together this tragedy.

We have requested the Washington State Patrol Forensic Crime Scene Team to assist with the investigation. We anticipate their arrival tonight. Investigators will remain at the residence all night with the WSP team.

There will be no further updates tonight. Sgt Lattin will follow up with an update on June 10th with any new information.
