OLYMPIA, Wash. - Gov. Jay Inslee announced new measures Wednesday to respond to the economic challenges brought on by the growing coronavirus outbreak, including a statewide 30-day moratorium on evictions.

"We're heading for some really choppy economic waters, and as with any squall, we know we're going to get through, but it's going to get tough," he said. "As my dad used to say, 'When you're going through hell, keep going.'"

Inslee announced new measures to aid both employees who may be losing pay and employers who are impacted by the virus. Among them:

  • A statewide moratorium on evictions of tenants for the next 30 days, including a moratorium on judicial actions by landlords
  • A request for the federal housing agency to suspend evictions for 60 days.
  • Additional help regarding unemployment benefits, including a waiver of the one-week waiting period for benefits, to get money into laid-off workers' pockets as soon as possible.
  • A request for the Trump administration to make a national disaster declaration, to open assistance to people as it would in a flood, earthquake, hurricane or other natural disaster.
  • A plea for utilities to offer assistance, waive late fees and offer payment plans for customers impacted by the outbreak
  • An expansion of eligibility for the family assistance program to include families without children

Inslee also announced millions of dollars in funding that will be made available through the U.S. Small Business Administration, including $7 billion recently OK'd by Congress.
