SALEM, Ore. – The White House has approved Oregon Governor Kate Brown’s request to declare the wildfires a “major disaster” for the state, Congressman Peter DeFazio said Tuesday afternoon.

Oregon Rep. DeFazio tweeted that Chief of Staff Mark Meadows told him the White House had approved the state’s major disaster declaration.

“This decision will make more Federal aid available to the State and provide resources needed for our communities to rebuild,” DeFazio said.

Gov. Brown made the request on Monday, citing the ongoing wildfires burning across the state. She confirmed the request was granted Tuesday afternoon.

“Oregon is strong. Oregon is resilient. But to fight fires of this scale, we need all the help we can get,” Brown said in a news release.

The Associated Press reports that Gov. Brown's request includes additional communications resources, damage assessment teams, search and rescue support, debris management, as well as shelter and medical assistance. Individual assistance for the counties and tribes was also included in the request.
