LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Arkansas State Police were responding to a report of gunfire at a school in Prescott, Akansas Monday morning. According to Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton, a suspect has been taken into custody.
According to a release from the Prescott School District, a student brought a concealed handgun to campus and shot another student. It appears that this was a premeditated attack specifically targeting the injured student, who was airlifted to a Little Rock hospital for immediate treatment. No other injuries were reported.
The district will resume classes and bus routes on Tuesday. Counselors will be available to talk with students and provide any support needed. The district will also worth with law enforcement to review safety and emergency protocols.
Willie Wilson, Prescott Public School District dean of students, said after the shooting was reported that the schools were "well-secured" and that the district had no further comment.
The neighboring Gurdon School District said it had gone on lockdown because of "an emergency" in Prescott. According to a Facebook post, school will dismiss at 10:30 a.m. Monday and all athletic events are cancelled.
The Nevada County sheriff's office said it could not immediately comment.
