Trump and Tennessee Senator trade insults over Twitter
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — The President of the United States and retiring Republican Senator Bob Corker went back and forth to exchange insults Sunday via Twitter.
President Trump took to social media to announce that Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker's "poll numbers TANKED when I wouldn't endorse him..."
Sen. Bob Corker responded to the President's tweets, saying "Yes, just like Mexico is paying for the wall... #AlertTheDaycareStaff."
Corker has been critical of President Trump and announced in September 2017 that he would not seek re-election for a third term in office.
The retiring senator is also one of the lawmakers trying to broker a deal between the White House and Senate Republicans and Democrats to reopen the government. The shutdown began at midnight, Dec. 21 and according to the White House, could continue through January.
Corker told CNN that he would like to stay in office for another three months. The retiring chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said he would like to help deal with the government shutdown and a host of foreign policy issues including Trump's planned withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria.
"I do wish I was serving for... 12 years and three months," Corker said, noting the next three months will be "very important" for U.S. policy and could determine President Trump's fate.
He continued, "I think this next three months could well determine whether he decides to run again or not. I think it's going to be very important for our country that the United States Senate really dig in and make sure we don't make other colossal mistakes as it relates to foreign policy."
Corker steps down in January and will be replaced by Marsha Blackburn, an eight-term Republican congresswoman.
