Worker hit, killed at active construction zone in Umatilla County

UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore. - A Kennewick woman has died while flagging a construction zone near Athena where a driver crashed into her.

Oregon State Police (OSP) said Tyresa Monaghan, 49, from Kennewick was flagging traffic at State Route 11, milepost 16 around 8:40 p.m., Tuesday.

Monaghan had a vehicle stopped around 8:40 Tuesday night when 76-year-old Leman Bledsoe side swiped the stopped vehicle and struck Monaghan while driving a Chrysler minivan.

Monaghan was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

According to reports, Bledsoe continued driving for approximately one mile in the construction zone, endangering numerous other workers before stopping.

Medics took Bledsoe to St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton where he received treatment.

Once released, OSP said he was taken to the Umatilla County Jail for DUII, two counts of reckless endanger of another person, reckless driving, failing to perform the duties of a driver (injured person), reckless endanger of a highway worker.

Additional charges are pending, according to authorities.
