Documented gang member arrested after hours-long standoff
KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Police took a man into custody after an hours-long standoff that started around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
Police said the man, Jose Antonio Contreras, is a documented gang member with a long criminal history in the Tri-Cities.
Police said they arrived at the Woodland Green apartment complex after getting a call that Contreras was removing the caller's porch lights. Upon arrival, police said they found Contreras lighting the caller's door on fire. Police said the man threatened them with a large knife, then ran to his apartment and barricaded himself in.
For several hours, police and the SWAT team used tactics like gas, tasers, and none were effective. Police said Contreras even assaulted their K9, Axel, kicking the dog in the head multiple times.
SWAT team eventually entered the apartment using explosives and, by force, took Contreras into custody. Police said Contreras is now in the hospital with minor injuries.
Police said they do not know Contreras' motive, and neighboring apartment complexes were all evacuated during the standoff with the help of the Kennewick Fire Department.
