Fire forces evacuations in Canyon Lakes neighborhood
KENNEWICK, Wash. —
A fire south of Kennewick is threatening homes and prompted evacuations in the Canyon Lakes neighborhood.
The large brush fire began around 3 P.M. Saturday.
A large plume of smoke blanketed the city of Kennewick and could be seen all throughout the Tri-Cities.
The fire began near Interstate 82 and State Route 397. Gusty winds quickly pushed the flames northeast towards the city.
Kennewick police evacuated dozens of homes.
Witnesses report that at least two homes have been burned. Several others appear to have been damaged.
The Washington State Department of Transportation says SR 397 is closed from I-82 to Nine Canyon Road.
The Gesa Carousel of Dreams opened up their event center to people evacuating. They’re located at 2901 Southridge Boulevard.
South Hills Church has also opened their doors for people who have evacuated. They’re located at 3700 W. 27th Avenue in Kennewick.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
