First-generation college grad becomes Kennewick police officer
KENNEWICK, Wash. - Police in Kennewick are congratulating their latest addition to the force.
Police Chief Ken Hohenberg swore in Jesus Contreras, on the morning of February 5, at the Kennewick Police Station.
An update from the Kennewick Police Department Facebook page said Contreras came from the Union County Sheriff's Office in LaGrande, OR, where he served as a Reserve Deputy.
Contreras earned his bachelor's in anthropology and sociology in March of 2017, as a first-generation college graduate in his family. He is also bilingual.
Police said the department only hires 5 percent of people who apply for a position as a police officer.
Officer Contreras will start his training at the Criminal Justice Training Center’s Law Enforcement basic academy early next week, according to an update.
