KENNEWICK, Wash -- A Kennewick family is out of their home just 11 days before Christmas , after a huge fire early Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out just after eight on the 1000 block of West 14th Place in Kennewick. When firefighters arrived, the lower floor of the house was fully engulfed in flames; about 50-percent of the home was damaged by the fire.

No one was home at the time, the homeowner arrived to home to discover the fire.

Firefighters think the fire likely started in or around a pellet stove. "With these cold conditions a lot of people are using fireplaces and pellet stoves for additional heat. Make sure that the're well maintained, make sure that they're checked out regularly and our investigation will continue into the exact cause of this fire," says Kennewick Battalion Chief Tod Kreutz.

Firefighters knocked the fire out pretty quickly, but say it was so cold this morning that their hoses and other equipment were freezing.
