Local woman sews dozens of homemade face masks to donate to nurses and hospitals
A Kennewick woman is using her sewing skills and spare time to create face masks for local nurses and hospitals that are running short on supply.
Tifany Caballero worked at a local dentist office where she was laid off due to the corona virus.
While she’s at home taking care of her four children, she’s also making face masks every single day for those that need them most right now.
When she heard that hospitals in our community were running out of masks, she ran to her sewing machine and began making homemade ones from fabrics she had at home.
"I just started thinking and doing research on it and said I’m just going to make them," said Caballero.
One week later and Tifany has already made over 20 masks that she's donating to several local nurses that no longer have any.
"I’m doing my best. I stay up late trying to make them. It keeps me busy and I’m just trying to help the community and that's all I can do,” said Caballero.
Made from 100% cotton fabric, Tifany makes the masks with special filters and openings with fun designs.
"I've made them to go over masks that they are wearing in the hospitals since they are so limited. This just helps the longevity of the mask. It gives them a little extra time to keep the masks that they do have on hand," said Caballero.
Tifany says she's already had women from the community reach out to her and help with the making of the masks to not only donate to hospitals, but others that may need them as well.
"All this does is provide a little extra support to the nurses and the hospitals in the front lines even if we need to offer them to the paramedics or whoever else. We're willing to make as many as we can as long as we have the fabric and what not,” said Caballero.
Tifany is just one of many people in our community that are using their talents to sew masks for those on the front line. There are many others that are also working to sew masks.
