RICHLAND, Wash. - A man in Richland was arrested Sunday night after it was said he was assaulting another man.

When authorities arrived they saw the suspect throwing beer bottles at a home.

The man has been identified as Jose Mercado Sr from Texas who was also known as Joey.

Authorities were also told Mercado had knife on his person and may be under the influence during the incident.

Mercado was uncooperative with demands according to the Richland PD and it took several officers to detain him.

Police say a taser was deployed; however, Mercado was able to remove the probes rendering it ineffective.

Additional officers arrived on the scene, were injured and taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center.

While officers were at the scene Mercado became unresponsive and officers immediately started rendering aid.

Richland Fire Department medics arrived at the scene and took over medical treatment.

Mercado was transported to Kadlec Regional Medical Center via ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.

Multiple officers have been placed on administrative leave per Richland PD policy.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

The Mercado family is asking for help with Joey's funeral expenses and has a GoFundMe account.
