KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Numerous people called 911 after seeing a man walking through town with a semi-automatic rifle on Friday.
The unnerving incident happened around 10 a.m. near the intersection of 5th and Vancouver in Kennewick.
Police searched the area for several minutes before finding the man.
Officers tell Action News that the man walked to the store but wanted to exercise his right to carry a gun.
The incident lead to the precautionary lock down of several schools nearby.
Highlands Middle School, Edison Elementary and Westgate Elementary all went into a brief lock down as a result.
Police say callers did the right thing by reaching out to emergency responders.
People are encouraged to call 911 if they see something suspicious.
