Mom of surviving MAX stabbing victim: 'He's lucky to be alive'
PORTLAND, Ore. —
The men were stabbed after they came to the defense of two young women who police say were being harassed by the suspect. Police and witnesses say the suspect, 35-year-old Jeremy Joseph Christian, was yelling anti-Muslim hate speech at the two women, one of whom was wearing a hijab.
Micah Fletcher is currently in the hospital being treated for serious injuries. His mother, Margie Fletcher, says the knife missed his jugular by 1 millimeter.
"He's in really bad condition," said Margie. "He cut a carotid artery, he will have some palatalization."
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler called the stabbing victims "heroes," and said their actions "should serve as an example and inspiration to us all."
"I'm proud of him for standing up. I'm grateful that he's here," said Margie Fletcher. "It's hard for me to say I want people to stand up but two girls might be alive because of them."
Jeremy Joseph Christian is facing several charges including aggravated murder. He'll be arraigned in Multnomah County Court Monday.
A GoFundMe for Micah has already raised more than $30,000.
