New feature being installed at Richland's nature-themed playground

Richland's nature-themed playground is gaining a new feature thanks to the Community Development Block Grant Program through HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).

Installation on a log-climbing structure is already underway at Goethals Playground.

Richland parks and Public Facilities is installing the giant new toy they say fits perfectly with the natural vegetation, zip-lines and tunnels already at the park.

Director Joe Schiessl says the new feature is a bit old-school, but that's what folks like about Goethals.

"If you ask any kid in that area what their favorite park is, it's Goethals Park because it's different from everything else," he explained. "It's a park where they can get a little bit dirty, where they can play in the small stream, they can be independent from their parents and they just get to be kids."

Schiessel says the until the project gets finished in a few months, the area behind the jersey barrier is considered a construction zone and encourages parents to keep their children clear of it.

Goethals Playground is one of 62 different parks in the City of Richland. For more information, visit the Goethals Nature Park website.

  • Goethals Playground is located at 301 Goethals Drive in Richland.
